HOTEL OVERVIEW

Lido Palace – Exterior

The Hotel

The Lido Palace on Lake Garda opened in 1899 as a resort for European royalty, and we have tried to recreate its timeless elegance. The hotel is housed in a renovated 19th-century building where top quality design has been used to create a stunning, luxurious environment.

Its redesign combines immersion in nature, welcoming common areas and intimacy in the rooms through the use of light and views of the surrounding landscape. A new glass hall between the park and gardens and the main neoclassical building, a glass walkway above the gardens – these features bring the natural beauty of our surroundings right into the hotel. The restaurants and outdoor bar even appear to float above the lake. On the neoclassical building, a new top floor of glass and steel houses the suites, which seem to be suspended in the lakeside landscape.

Riva del Garda

History

The Lido Palace opened its doors in 1899 in Riva del Garda, the loveliest spot on Lake Garda, at a time when the Trentino region of Italy was part of Austria’s Hapsburg Empire. The plan was much more than building a hotel; there was also an ambitious landscaping venture to turn Riva into the Kaiser’s very own version of the Riviera.

During the Belle Époque the Lido welcomed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne, and Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, sister to Tsar Nicholas of Russia. The region became Italian after World War I, and King Vittorio Emanuele and Queen Elena stayed at the Lido Palace in 1921.

But the hotel fell into decline in the 1990s. We won the design competition for its renovation in 2000, and the work was completed in 2011. The redesign was the work of award-winning architect Alberto Cechetto, professor at IUAV, the Venice faculty of architecture, renowned for his ambitious urban projects. In 2012 he won the Ischia International Architecture Prize for this work.

Park

The hotel’s extensive gardens and wooded grounds were established at the end of the 19th century with magnificent cedar, cypress, yew and palm trees. Our redesign maintained the verdant beauty of the space. The new structures like the swimming pool and the restaurants took into account the existing trees, particularly in the southern corner of the park facing the lake. The indoor and outdoor pools, a massage area, the spa and fitness centre are located in the grounds.
